Our Store & Our Story
The Artisan Gallery opened in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1984. We moved to our much larger, more central location at 162 Main St. in 2004. We were then able to greatly expand the number of craftspeople, makers and designers that we represent. Our collection includes handmade ceramics, creative clothing, a fun children's section, beautiful accessories and jewelry. We love to feature artists who reside and work in the Pioneer Valley and the hills that surround it.
Our clothing collection revolves around pieces that are shapely with an easy fit. The two styles we focus on might best be described as sophisticated/bohemian and contemporary European. Our customers tell us they receive the most compliments and get the most wear from the clothing they discover here. We are very proud of that.
It is said that a life can only be understood backwards.
I was born in 1951 in Detroit. My first retail experience was playing store in my basement with canned goods from the fruit cellar. My mother was an excellent seamstress who could alter patterns and remake clothing to fit me and my sister. We foraged through Arlan's, a discount warehouse for fabric remnants and bargain clothing of any size. As time passed my mother and I designed clothing. She made them - usually in multiple colors and patterns.
My buying experience came from from browsing Gold Bell and S&H Green Stamp catalogues. I would pretend to be a certain type of woman - sporty & modern, then frilly & romantic. I would go through the catalogues and pick out items for the home and the whole imaginary family with each persona. I did this for hours. That young girl never imagined the satisfying and creative career that was to come.
